Shylock - Story

After "Le storie del signor Keuner" from Brecht – also produced by Nuova Scena - Teatro Stabile di Bologna e Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione – Roberto Andò and Moni Ovadia once more collaborate on a new show, written and directed together and inspired by Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. It is another of Moni Ovadia's creations which belongs to a type of musical theatre around which his expressive research has always revolved, combining his experience as an actor and musician.

On stage, in the role of Shylock, an exceptional character: Shel Shapiro. A pioneer of rock music in Europe and a father of Italian song since the sixties, the mythical leader of The Rokes has furthered his career in production and song-writing and has lately been in involved in the theatre with the recital Sarà una bella società written by Edmondo Berselli.

In an unspecified location, a crossover between a hospital and a slaughter-house, in a future which has already begun, an enigmatic merchant, whose fortune's origins are unclear, and a Jewish theatre director who has been inactive for many years, meet to discuss a project they're both involved in: a production of The Merchant of Venice. They share an obsession for Shylock, one of Shakespeare's greatest characters. As the visions and exhilarating paradoxes of The Merchant of Venice imagined by the Director with a strange tragicomic company flow before us on stage, a subtle and unnerving game is played out, a game where what is at stake is the very possibility of keeping the theatre itself alive, as a safeguard against imposture and hate, a fragile talisman for the greatest invention of all, identity.
