Oylem Goylem - Story The Yiddish language, that elusive combination of German, Hebrew, Polish, Russian, Ukranian and Rumanian, together with the universal condition of the Wandering Jew and his lack of a homeland; this is what we find at the heart of Oylem Goylem.One could say the show has the form of a classical cabaret, as we know it today. It does, in fact, alternate musical numbers and songs with jokes, anecdotes and quotations, which the proven ability of the entertainer knows how to render delightfully vivacious. The particular characteristic of this show resides in its being dedicated exclusively to that part of the Jewish culture of which Yiddish is the tongue and Klezmer the music. Moni Ovadia himself is both author and performer. With him, the musicians give life to a representation based on rhythm, self-irony and the constant alternation of tones and linguistic registers, from vocal to instrumental; a rich exhibit of humor and conversation, brilliant zingers and scholarly quotations, jokes and a music which brings together liturgical singing with gypsy sounds. A show with the flavor of "steppes and back-shops, roads and synagogues". All this is what Moni Ovadia calls "the sound of exile, the music of dispersal": in one word, the diaspora. Klezmer derives from the Hebrew words "Kley Zemer", which refer to the musical instruments (generally, the violin and stringed instruments in general and the clarinet) used to play the traditional music of Eastern European Jews from the XVIth century on. Moni's StageOrchestra is inspired by that music, by its constant change of tones and by the spirit which pervades it, from the sorrowful, monochord which revives the spirit of a synagogue prayer to the explosive joy of songs and dance music created for happier occasions. |
