Shylock (2010)
Survival trials (for Jews and non-Jews)
Using words by Shakespeare, texts from the Jewish tradition and quotations from current pop culture, this show by Andò and Ovadia becomes an in-depth reflection on money, crime and corruption, and on theatre and art as a safeguard against hate and imposture. The show opened in the the Summer of 2009 with Moni Ovadia, Shel Shapiro and the Stage Orchestra.
In an unspecified location, a crossover between a hospital and a slaughter-house, in a future which has already begun, an enigmatic merchant, whose fortune's origins are unclear, and a Jewish theatre director who has been inactive for many years, meet to discuss a project they're both involved in: a production of The Merchant of Venice. They share an obsession for Shylock, one of Shakespeare's greatest characters. As the visions and exhilarating paradoxes of The Merchant of Venice imagined by the Director with a strange tragicomic company flow before us on stage, a subtle and unnerving game is played out, in which each of the charcaters wants to change Shakespeare's ending in their own way. A theatre within the theatre, in which director and impresario both alternate at playing the role of Shylock and in which each of them sees their own identity called into discussion.
